Department of Pathology, CMRI -A Model Laboratory:

The department of pathology at CMRI is an ultramodern laboratory matching international standards. It is a NABL accredited laboratory having facilities for various types of investigations. Dry-chemistry for biochemical tests, automated hematology cell counters, electrophoresis with scanner, chemiluminiscence, Real time PCR, Bactec (routine and TB culture), Histo and cytopathology, frozen sections, etc are some of the facilities available here.
It maintains strict internal and external quality controls in all sections of pathology. External quality check is maintained by regular assessment from AIIMS, VELLORE and BIO-RAD, USA. This lab was ranked first by Bio-Rad USA out of 603 International participants. It is indeed one of the finest laboratories of this country.

Clinical Pathology:

Clinical Pathology is located on the first floor of the hospital and is a technologist marvel. It is equipped with the latest machines, run by highly trained technologists and supervised by doctors who are specialists in their respective fields as Pathology, Biochemistry and Microbiology .The different laboratories of the department are Clinical Biochemistry Haematology, Histopathology, Clinical Microbiology, Immunologyand Clinical Pathology.

AUTOMATION:
Extensive automation in all the divisions increased efficiency & capacity while reducing the turn around time for results. The Vitros 250 (dry chemistry -that eliminates the hazards of liquid chemistry), cryostat (frozen biopsy for on table diagnosis), fully automatic tissue processor, cytocentrifuge, BACTEC 9050 (for diagnosis of sepsis), BACTEC TB 460 (for TB diagnosis) and mini API (for automatic bacterial identification) are just a few names in the list.

SPEED & ACCURACY:
These are the immediate outcomes of automation. BACTEC 9050 can yield a positive result in as early as 2 days, BACTEC TB 460 in 2 weeks compared to 1 week and 4-8 weeks respectively by manual methods. Vitros 250 generates results with excellent precision & accuracy, can handle 40 samples at a time & about 300 parameters per hour. The mini API gives a bacterial identification & antibiogram in as little as 6 hours compared to 24 hours by older techniques.

QUALITY ASSURANCE:
All the divisions are registered with renowned laboratories like Bio Rad (USA), CMC (VeUore) and AIIMS (New Delhi) for External Quality Control programmes and have excellent annual perfonnances. Regular internal quality control schemes further bolster the' Zero error" aim.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

• The department houses the only fully automated and state of the art microbiology facility of Eastern India.

• The only laboratory using immunofluorescence microscopy (for ANA profile). iii) The one ofits kind electrophoresis unit for diagnosis of thalassaemia and multiple myeloma.

ACHIEVEMENTS:
The laboratory is proud to announce that it has secured the highly coveted accreditation from the NABL and equally proud to house a biochemistry laboratory which has ranked No. 1 in the world in External quality assurance sefV1ces.

The laboratory has already started working towards the goal of obtaining accreditation by College of American Pathologists (CAP).
